Yesterday, Weds. July 2, Sill no wind. We motored up the New Jersey coast to Atlantic City, again seeing pilot whales swimming past the boat, jumping out of the water as they do. Chuck and Cheryl made the decision to leave the boat as Chuck developed a bad knee which was worsening and creating potential for greater injury. The weather was in the 70's. We enjoyed the skyline of Atlantic City as we came upon it, all the crazy casino architecture. We got a slip at Trump Marina. So far gambling losses, 25 cents. Winnings none. |
Today, July 3rd, we are weathered in as tropical storm Bill is passing over. We're planning on leaving Atlantic City on July 4th between 2am and 4am to reach New York City by 5pm July 4th. Seas 2-4 ft. (I have my transdem patch on), wind 15kts. We'll see what our boat can do!

Karl is becoming a well rounded sailor. He is learning navigation, sail handling, can pump up the dinghy and reverse the process and roll it up into its cover, helm, tie up the boat, fill all the tanks. He is great help and pleasant to be with in close quarters. |
Yesterday, July 1st was a day of adventure. It started off calm but as we headed down the Delaware Bay, the waves built as the winds were on our nose and the tide was going a the opposite direction. Several large ships passed as well as pods of pilot whales as we entered the Atlantic Ocean. The sun was setting as we approached Cape May harbor entrance. By the time we entered the harbor it was too dark to find the marina so we anchored. This boat is great taking on waves and great for 5 people living aboard at anchor. Chuck and Cheryl Lawson arrived on June 29th as our final crew. |
Today we are powering up the New Jersey coast to Atlantic city. Pilot whales again swam by. Love the wildlife! |
Yesterday we motored up the Chesapeake for 10 hours. It was hot and humid. We drank a lot of water. Herons watched from the bell buoys, Ospreys circled overhead. Since Karl is vegetarian, we have had some great vegetarian eats. Today we are motoring down Delaware Bay. No wind. |
The HR Rendezvous is nearly over on Harness Creek. It is eye opening to hear people tell stories about sailing adventures all over the world, living on their boats. The anchorage is full of HR's this morning. We are rafted on with an HR36 named Kemosabe. He gave us a lot of advice about our sail down Delaware Bay on Tues and up the New Jersey coast as he has done it several times. |

Today, Sunday June 29th is provisioning day for the trip. Additional crew will be boarding. We're excited, had trouble sleeping last night. So much to do, we're finally going to get underway! |
We're powering up to Annapolis as there is no wind. Hot, but a beautiful day.

On June 30th the Manitou will leave Annapolis, Maryland, "Sailing Capitol of the World," and arrive in her home port of Milwaukee, Wisconsin sometime in September, 2003.
We'll stay in New York a week or so then: Hudson River to Troy, NY. (north of Albany) to enter the Erie Canal and proceed to Buffalo.
Next: Lake Erie with a stop in Cleveland so Ann can fly home to work for 2 days and check the cats. On to Lake Huron via Detroit, North Channel and Lake Michigan.
Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay (estuary) have been unseasonably cool and rainy. In other words, we've had Wisconsin weather! Living aboard Manitou (Hallberg-Rassy 39) since May 15th, we've been outfitting and organizing for our journey home. Jim put in a larger head tank and we had our air conditioning refitted. We've been learning the history of the Chesapeake and eating the incredible seafood it produces. Of special note is the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.
Osprey, muskrats, water snakes, ducks, and a Great Blue heron fish, swim, and nest nearby our slip. We're on a river off Herring Bay. |

We've been sailing on the Chesapeake on the non rain days, testing our sails, engine, auto pilot, and GPS. We've also been testing our navigation skill with paper charts.
Thursday, June 26th, we will sail to Annapolis in preparation for a 2 day Hallberg-Rassy Rendezvous. Sunday June 29th, Chuck and Cheryl arrive. Monday is the big day of our long journey.
Jim’s elder son, Eric and wife Vicki, visited us on one of the best week-ends this month. He set up our laptop for use on board and is our webmaster. Thanks Eric for all your patient instruction on the new laptop and digital camera.
We'll try to post new information along our trip on a regular basis.
