A Voyage with Manitou

August 14, 2003 - Vermilion and Put In Bay, Ohio
Every stop we make on Lake Erie becomes more picturesque. Vermilion is a small town on canals. We stayed there Aug. 12 and 13th, did some boat repairs and enjoyed the atmosphere.

We arrived in Put In Bay on South Bass Island, Aug 14th after 4 hours of motoring a calm Lake Erie.
This is the site where Oliver Hazard Perry won the Battle of Erie against the British in 1813 and kept Lake Erie and surrounding area in American hands. There is a 335 ft. monument for his effort.
The town is lively with few cars but many bicycles and golf carts for rent! Everyone seemed to be in a good mood until the massive power outage occurred at 4 p.m.

August 10, 2003 - Mentor, Ohio
Aug 9th we had a breeze of 12 knots so had the main up. Had to attach a preventor to keep the main from jibing as the wind was behind us. Monday we plan Vermilion, Ohio then to Put in Bay, in the Erie Islands on Tuesday.

Another day of motor/sailing. We saw a monarch butterfly who accompanied us, flying next to use. We thought he might land for a rest. He didn't. Jim saw a large Heron at the club docks. We arrived in the Geneva Marina, Ohio at 5p.m. |

We saw "Candian Progress" an ore carrier that Jim had designed the gear boxes for over ten years ago. They sailed past and saild the gears we working well.

Happy 7th wedding anniversary to our Webmaster and his wife, Vicki.
Tomorrow, Jim and I will set out on Lake Erie for Erie, Penn. We hope to sail it in one day. Then on to Cleveland and Detroit. The new radar has been sorted out and overlays the chart plotter. Hopefully there will be a breeze to carry us without the noisy engine.
